Crowns
In some cases, a tooth may be weakened by old dental treatments received for past problems; it may then become necessary to have the tooth restored to its original size and shape, or create additional physical support. In some cases, the affected tooth may even require a complete "makeover." For cases like these, a crown may be the best option.

While inlays and outlays cover the chewing surface of the tooth, and fillings fill in the empty interior space of the tooth, crowns completely cover every visible part of the tooth; for this reason, they are sometimes referred to as "caps." With crowns, part of your tooth remains while being essentially "rebuilt" to resemble the tooth at its exterior best.
Porcelain crowns can certainly improve the look of a tooth (or multiple teeth); however, it is recommended only in conjunction with prior repair of a tooth - not simply for cosmetic purposes. In order to properly fit a crown, a large part of the tooth must be shaved down - which can be necessary in cases of broken or weak teeth, but can be damaging to otherwise healthy teeth. As such, crowns are often the best option where lesser replacement techniques will not protect the patient's tooth properly.
