External Causes - As many of us know, certain foods such as onion, cheese, and alcohol can cause bad breath. Other external causes include smoking, a common component of chronic halitosis.
Intraoral Causes - Bacteria in the mouth is the most common reason for halitosis. This Bacteria are most often found surface of the tongue and in the tissue below the gum line and next to each tooth. Poor dental hygiene will allow these bacteria to thrive, possibly even leading to gum disease.
Extraoral Causes - Medical conditions such as diabetes, gastric reflux, sinusitis, tonsillitis, liver disease, colds, lung disease, and esophageal disease can cause halitosis.
